Reverse Buddy Scheme

The Reverse Buddy Scheme: Real Change Starts with Real Conversations

On Tuesday 28th January, something amazing happened. MCYPC launched the Reverse Buddy Scheme, bringing care-experienced young people together with members of the Corporate Parent Board (CPB) and the Commissioner—people who make decisions about the care system.

But this time, the professionals weren’t teaching us. We were teaching them.

So, What’s the Reverse Buddy Scheme?

It’s a simple but powerful idea. Instead of professionals telling us how things should be, we get to share our real experiences with them—our highs, our struggles, and what actually helps.

Every two weeks, young people will meet with a professional for around 30 minutes to chat, connect and help them truly understand what life in care is like.

Why Does This Matter?

We all know that decisions about the care system impact us—but often, they’re made by people who don’t fully understand what it’s like to be in our shoes.

This scheme is changing that. By hearing directly from us, professionals will be better equipped to make decisions that actually work for young people in care.

And from the feedback at our launch, it’s clear they’re ready to listen.

One professional said, “I believe this initiative has great potential for success. It’s encouraging to see that the young people appreciate the busy schedules of the professionals who attended and committed to this project.”

Another shared how valuable it was to hear about the people who inspired us in our own lives.

This wasn’t just another meeting—it’s a chance to create real change.

What’s Next?

Now that we’ve launched, our first buddy meetings will begin soon. This is just the start of an important journey where professionals learn from us, understand us and—most importantly—work with us to make things better.

If you’re a care-experienced young person, this is proof that our voices matter. And there’s still time to get involved, if you would like. Just drop us email or complete this form and we’ll get in touch: https://forms.office.com/e/BHSUv753G1

If you’re a professional, this is your chance to listen, learn and do better.

Together, we’re shaping a care system that truly works for young people. 💙
