With the recent spotlight on the Netflix series Adolescence, one thing is clearer than ever: the distressing reality for young people in police custody.
Each year, over 1,400 children across Kent find themselves detained without a parent or guardian to support them as their Appropriate Adult. In these critical moments, The Young Lives Foundation (YLF) steps in—training and supporting volunteers to stand beside these young people, ensuring they are treated fairly and with dignity.
“Our volunteers make an incredible difference during what can be an extremely difficult experience for a young person. But the need is growing, and we urgently need more volunteers to join us.”
– Sandra Wheatley, Appropriate Adult Coordinator at YLF.
YLF recently spoke with KMTV to highlight the vital role of Appropriate Adults and the urgent demand for more volunteers.
