Youngsters Enjoy A Night Away With YLF!
Last week the Medway Challengers Junior Group spent an activity packed day and night at the Arethusa Venture Centre in Upnor, Rochester. Eleven 6 to 10 year olds got the chance to try out some new activities and spend the night away from their home with their friends.
The first evening was spent in the Adventure Playground and building a bonfire on the banks of the Medway spending time together watching the sun go down.
The next morning, after a little bit of sleep and a good breakfast it was time to try Crate Stack. This involved working as a team and building a stack of drinks crates as high as you could whilst balancing on top of them. This activity relied on teamwork and a fair amount of bravery; Alex said, "The best bit was flying in the air at the end when the crates fell down. I felt like one of the Angry Birds!"
Next on the itinerary was a boat trip down the river Medway, taking in all the sights and finding out all about the area. Some of the group even got to have a go at being Captain and steering the boat.
After lunch it was time to have a go at raft building in the swimming pool. Paddling and steering the raft was really hard work but both teams managed to get to the end of the pool, even if only one person was left on the raft!!!
Sadly, it was then time to go home. Lakiya said, "I wish we could have stayed longer and done some more events."
Despite the wide range of ages, one of whom was only six, everyone one got along really well and it was great to see everyone joining in and helping each other. Not just with the activities but also when it came to clearing the tables and serving each other with drinks and meals. I have a feeling that we will all be back again for more next year!
